Carrick Stafford Wood, 2

June 05, 2017

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see- I see a brave boy smiling at me.

Carrick Stafford Wood passed away peacefully June 5, 2017, at home in the arms of his devoted parents. He leaves a lasting impression on all who knew him or heard his story. Carrick’s Journey brought the community together in miraculous ways, and he will always be an inspiration to his family and friends.

Carrick was born at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center on July 4, 2014, to parents Patrick and Crista Wood. The family spent the first months of Carrick’s life in Boston, where he made many friends and learned to love the Red Sox and Dunkin’ Donuts.

It didn’t take long for Carrick to become completely attached to his big brother Connor, whom could always get a smile out of his baby bro. One of Carrick’s favorite things was sitting and watching Bubble Guppies (on multiple screens, of course) with Connor, and later with baby brother Paxton, too.

During his short life, Carrick explored all he could, and especially loved the fun trips he took with his parents to Disney World, Hampton Beach, and all over Berkshire County. He wanted to be outside whenever possible, whether in his swing, being pushed around the neighborhood in his stroller, or going for long car rides. Some of his favorite things were playing catch, blowing bubbles, his blocks, tires of all kinds, and snacking on eggs, feta, avocadoes, and olives. He was captivated by Eric Carle’s “Brown Bear” books (of which he had multiple copies), Wheel of Fortune, and Law & Order (especially Lennie Briscoe). His love of Papa's big truck, emergency vehicle lights, bulldozers, and fast cars always guaranteed smiles. And there was no problem that couldn’t be fixed by his prized fuzzy striped blankie.

Carrick is survived by his grandparents, Richard Wood Jr. and Dennis and Willie "Roche” Gajda, and great-grandmother Theresa Wood; brothers Paxton Wood and Connor Cirullo; and aunts and uncles Nicholas Peters, Benjamin Wood, Amelia Wood, Abigail Wood, and John Wood. He also leaves his godparents John and Jen Marlowe, many loving cousins, and his favorite cat pal Willow.

While his journey has come to an end, Carrick’s impact will live on. Carrick fought harder than anyone we have ever known. He has taught us so many lessons in his short life. Sometimes, real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles.

Funeral notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, 70 Marshall St., North Adams. Calling hours are Friday, June 9, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carrick’s Journey, care of Flynn & Dagnoli, which the family will distribute to local charities and organization that support cancer patients and survivors.
