NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — MCLA's new science building has bones.
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts hosted a topping off ceremony Thursday to celebrate the completion of the steel structure on the campus.
The $40 million Center for Science and Innovation will be next equipped with its exterior envelope as the contractors are on pace to complete the building for next September.
College President Mary Grant characterized the event as "Christmas, New Year's and birthdays" wrapped into one day and thanked everyone from government officials to students to the board of trustees for making it happen.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — From Cuban percussions, Haitian rhythms, folk, rock, blues and gospel music to a performance of an American classic by an Irish actor, poetry and a bit of Broadway, the 2012-13 season of MCLA Presents! will bring performances from around the globe to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and other nearby venues. The season will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 3 p.m. in the MCLA Quad with Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez and his Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Bill Schmick, financial columnist and portfolio manager at Berkshire Money Management, the Pittsfield-based registered investment adviser, will be teaching a course this fall at Berkshire Community College.
The course, "AMERICA’S FUTURE: Buy, Sell or Hold?" will be offered as part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's Adult Learning Program. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury Drama Team invites North Adams Public Schools students, Grades 2 through 12, to audition on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 3:30 p.m., in the Drury High School auditorium, for singing, dancing and acting roles in its November production of "The Wizard of Oz." Children in Grades 2 and up who attend the following elementary schools may also audition: Clarksburg, Gabriel Abbott Memorial, Savoy and Stamford, Vt.; as well as homeschoolers who reside in North Adams.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Committee was presented with the annual public school report for 2012 at Tuesday's meeting.
The comprehensive, 22-page summary compiled by Ellen Sutherland, assistant to the superintendent, outlined highlights over the past year for programming, student achivement and extracurricular activities.
"We have a lot going and this isn't even all of it," said Superintendent of Schools James Montepare. "It kind of boosts your spirit a little bit to see all the hard work that everyone is putting in to this."

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts opened for the fall semester with a reminder of the importance of higher education and a reflection of community spirit.
The past decade has seen growth in the programs, buildings and academic profile of the school under the leadership of President Mary Grant.
"Ten years ago, I stood at this podium for the first time and opened my first breakfast," said Grant to the traditional convocation breakfast gathering of trustees, faculty, staff, student leaders and local and state officials.
