Pownal Man Charged With Making Threatening Call to SVMC

BENNINGTON, Vt. — A Pownal man is being charged with calling in a bomb threat that caused Southwestern Vermont Medical Center's Pownal campus to declare a lockdown last week.    Allen L. Spaulding, 33, of Route 7 was charged with false public alarm violation and ordered to appear in Superior Court's Criminal Division on Oct. 1.   Spaulding is accused of making a threatening call via a cell phone on Aug. 14 at about 9:24 a.m. to the facility on Route 7 just north of the Massachusetts line. According to State Trooper Shawn Sommers, Spaulding was "located at a later date" and issued the citation to appear in court.

Pownal Man Killed in NJ Turnpike Accident

POWNAL, Vt. — A local man was killed on the New Jersey Turnpike on Wednesday after his motorcycle broke down.

Thomas Snow, 52, was apparently struck by a tractor trailer truck while trying to move his Harley-Davidson off the highway, according to several news reports out of New Jersey.

New Jersey State Police said Snow was in the northbound lane and trying to move the motorcycle across the highway from the left shoulder to the right when the truck hit him in the righthand lane.

The accident occurred about 1:30 a.m. in Hamilton, south of the Route 195 Exit. He was taken to a hospital and died not long afterward.

Two Accidents, No Injuries in Southern Vermont

STAMFORD, Vt. — A local woman avoided injury when her Chrysler Town and Country crashed into a tree on Saturday morning shortly before 11.

 Karen Wheeler, 57, of Readsboro was southbound on Route 100 in her 2005 van when she experienced a mechanical malfunction with her steering wheel, according to State Trooper Lauren Ronan. The van left the highway near Lincoln Road, collided with a guardrail and then a tree.  

There was extensive damage to the guardrail and vehicle, which is considered totaled. Wheeler was wearing a seat belt and no one was injured in the crash. The conditions were dry and sunny.

Williamstown, Vermont Police Searching for Robbery Suspect

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Multiple police agencies from two states Saturday night were investigating back-to-back armed robberies in Williamstown and Pownal, Vt.

At 8:22 p.m., a masked man entered the Spirit Shop at 280 Cole Ave., brandishing a handgun and demanding the clerk open the cash register, Williamstown Police reported in a news release.

After a brief argument, the armed man fled the store without acquiring any merchandise or money.

About two hours later, a similar incident occurred at the Stewarts Shop convenience store in Pownal, Vt., about a quarter mile north of the state line.

Killing of Pownal Dog Under Investigation

POWNAL, Vt. — State police are investigating the killing of a dog in the Burdick Trailer Park.

Troopers were called Wednesday, July 1, at 11 p.m. to the park after a neighbor walking along the railroad tracks discovered the remains of the dog and alerted its owner.

Cassie, a 2-year-old Corgi/shepherd mix, had been reported missing the week before. She sustained what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head.

State police say they do have some leads in the shooting. The charge would be aggravated cruelty to an animal.
