In "Santaland Diaries," at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox through Dec. 30, the mawkish sentimentality of commercial Christmas has been replaced by the story of a Macy's elf dealing with the reality of working retail at this time of year.

It's a very different kind of holiday show, with both the "feel of time gone by with today's edgy, fast-paced, tension-filled 24/7 lifestyle," says director Tony Simotes in his program notes.

Instead of a neatly wrapped morality tale like "A Christmas Carol," or a sweet dream like "The Nutracker," "Santaland Diaries" is one person's recounting of his "Christmas from Hell." In the hands of

The conspiratorial 'Anonymous' claims Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans) is the real Bard.
Academics, fops and dilettantes posing as film critics will exit 'Anonymous' scratching their heads, wondering who was who in the Elizabethan political thriller, and speculating if any of its thesis on Shakespearean authorship is true. Folks who couldn't care less but who randomly see films without reading reviews will question their lifestyle.

Roland Emmerich's movie isn't one you just drop in on haphazardly. The first half hour, off-putting by the comings and goings of unidentified, 16th-century intriguers and the dark anterooms

Dennis Farina is a small-time hood seeking  warmth and inspired storylines in 'The Last Rites of Joe May.'
Writer-director Joe Maggio's "The Last Rites of Joe May" asserts that even insignificant characters aren't exempt from very great tragedies. A petty hood most contented when he has a trunk full of phony Rolexes to sell, Chicago's Joe May nonetheless figures he was destined for greatness. Gosh knows why the last 60 years have proved differently.

Portrayed with fine skill and touching sympathy by Dennis Farina, Joe exits the county hospital after a long bout with pneumonia. Although quite unprepared for
