The Independent Investor Credit: The Real Cause Behind The Great RecessionBy Bill Schmick, 03:10PM / Friday, May 18, 2012
It has been almost five years since the start of the financial crisis. In its second year, the so-called recovery has been disappointing, unlike any other economic cycle since World War II. At the heart of this failure lies our country's inability to recognize why this time it is truly different. That difference can be summed up in one word — credit.
We must reach back to the Great Depression to find the last time there was a large-scale banking crisis in which leverage and excess credit were the main cause of a recession. Too much credit (sometimes called leverage) is the "Achilles heel" of any economic system. Unfortunately, neither government nor the private sector has 0 Comments Read More >> |

'Dark Shadows': Eternity RevisitedBy Michael S. Goldberger, iBerkshires Film Critic 12:45PM / Thursday, May 17, 2012
Popcorn Column by Michael S. Goldberger Johnny Depp teams up with Tim Burton yet again in the vampire film 'Dark Shadows.'Explaining Johnny Depp's niche in the film world, my daughter Erin, a promising player in the New York art scene, informed that the lead in Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" is an iconoclast for the masses. Joanne, her mother, my wife and a college professor, simply exclaimed, "I just want to see my Johnny." My obsolescence couldn't be more satisfying. Neither a fan of the series when it played the small screen from 1966 to 1971, nor of vampires in general, approaching this assignment I would then be Filmdom's Alexis de Tocqueville, an 0 Comments Read More >> |

CUMMINGTON, Mass. — The transition of the Old Creamery in Cummington to a community-owned cooperative grocery store took a giant leap forward this month with Florence Savings Bank's commitment to provide necessary outside financing.
Thanks to the bank's commitment, just one more fundraising task remains before the Old Creamery Co-op can purchase the business.
