MCLA, Habitat for Humanity Partner Offer Free Tax Assistance

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and its Department of Business Administration are partnering with Habitat for Humanity to offer free tax preparation services to residents in need through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.    MCLA will offer in-person, drop-off, and virtual tax assistance to qualified taxpayers beginning Feb.12.   Habitat for Humanity administers VITA, a program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), to assist taxpayers with disabilities, limited English-speaking skills, those 50 years of age or older, or individuals and families who earn $64,000 or less a year.?MCLA students will be available to

North Adams Officials Mull School Closure

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — School officials are eyeing an accelerated closing of an elementary school as they prepare for the coming fiscal year's "fiscal cliff."   A draft budget for fiscal 2025 is up $2,430,054, a 12 percent increase over this year. This is largely being driven by three factors: contracted obligations, higher costs related to out-of-district placements and the loss of nearly $1 million in ESSER funds.   Administrators presented the initial figures to the Finance and Facilities subcommittee on Monday morning along with preliminary proposal to close Greylock School to offset costs.    The subcommittee wasn't ready to make any decisions,

Berkshire Health Group Sets 7% Rate Hike for Fiscal 2025

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Municipal entities that use Berkshire Health Group will see a 7 percent increase in the cost of health insurance in fiscal year 2025.   That was the decision of the BHG board at a two-hour meeting Monday morning at the Charles H. McCann Technical School.   By a 6-1 vote with four voting units absent, the board decided on an increase that will maintain coverage for employees in the member units while drawing down the health group's roughly $16 million reserve by about $480,000.   The reserve is held by the joint purchase group in order to absorb higher than expected health insurance claims in any given year. Clarksburg Officials Want to Study School Regionalization

Local Firefighters Graduate from Firefighting Academy

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy recently graduated Class S35 consisting of 27 firefighters representing 16 fire departments including North Adams and Pittsfield.   State Fire Marshal Jon M. MCLA Women's Basketball Falls at Fitchburg State

North Adams Walgreens to Close in February

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Walgreens pharmacy store is closing Thursday, Feb. 22.    A spokesperson for the company confirmed the closing on Thursday and said "We will make every effort to place impacted team members at nearby stores."   Pharmacy customers are being told their prescriptions will automatically transfer to the Walgreens at 212 Main St. in Williamstown.    iBerkshires did not get a response on questions about the building being for sale or if other Walgreens in Berkshire County are also being affected.     Walgreens announced last year the closure of 150 stores in the United States; it closed about 200 in 2019.   The
