@theMarket: The Fed Finds Religion
By Bill Schmick,
09:26AM / Saturday, February 02, 2019
After two years of tightening monetary policy, the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank signaled this week that it was time to put their monetary tightening program on hold. The stock market soared in celebration.   As we closed out the month of January, stocks are gaining. The October-December declines that culminating in the "Christmas Eve Massacre," which were the worst in 80 years, are rapidly disappearing. Investors who were smart enough to hold fast should be made whole again by the end of this quarter, if not before.   That does not mean that the volatility that has beset the markets of late will fade away. Quite the contrary, I expect the wild swings in the stock market to

MCLA Graduates See Future in Revived Parlor Cafe
By Jack Guerino, iBerkshires Staff
06:48AM / Saturday, February 02, 2019

The Parlor reopened this past fall with new ownership.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Julia Daly and Nick Tardive spent a lot of time at the Parlor when they were students at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.   "I lived in the apartment upstairs and we both patronized the Parlor basically every single day," Tardive said of the Ashland Street coffeehouse. "So when it closed it felt like there was almost like a black hole in this little area."   The former Brick Oven on Ashland Street long sat vacant before reopening first as the Elf Parlor Cafe in 2009, then the Parlor cafe in 2012, and again in 2016 rebranded as the SereniTea Parlor.   Last

Bernard Will Seek Proposals for Historic Mohawk Theater
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
01:16AM / Friday, February 01, 2019
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Mohawk Theater's marquee has been a beacon of hope, an assurance that eventually its siren call of neon will once more draw crowds to the downtown.    But the hard facts are that the theater's been closed for more than a third of its 81-year lifespan.   It's a landmark that's bedeviled three administrations and outlived several organizations hoping to revive it. It's been a constant in every mayoral election and a question for every council candidate. During that time, the amount of money required to restore the theater has only grown.     Mayor Thomas Bernard, the third mayor to deal with the city-owned

By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
07:38PM / Thursday, January 31, 2019

The address was attended by past and future councilors and other officials or their representatives.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — One year into his first term, Mayor Thomas Bernard is positing North Adams as a small city that can do big things.    "Let's make being the smallest what we all know it is: A competitive advantage," he told viewers on Thursday night in his second state of the city address.   A year ago, Bernard laid out some goals he hoped to address in his first year. Now halfway through his term, the mayor is building on themes of investment and leveraging partnerships and regional initiatives to move the state's smallest city

'Serenity': It's all Just a Big
By Michael S. Goldberger, iBerkshires Film Critic
03:52PM / Thursday, January 31, 2019
Viewing director Steven Knight's "Serenity, a film consumed with the notion that things aren't what they appear to be, I was uncomfortably reminded that I don't like to figure things out. I don't do puzzles, don't fancy mystery yarns unless they're old classics or approach the inventiveness of "The Usual Suspects" (1995), and if you ask me when train B will pass Train A if both leave their original locations at so and so time, I'll excuse myself, lie that I'll be right back, and head for the veranda for something less complicated, like a cocktail and maybe a few of those little hot dog hors d' oeuvres.   So, if you're looking for

The Independent Investor: Europe, the World's Sick Sibling
By Bill Schmick,
12:08PM / Thursday, January 31, 2019
The European Community is beset by worries. Brexit, trade threats, a slowing Chinese economy, and internal politics at home have all conspired to slow growth, employment, and positive sentiment.   This year, the EU will be lucky to see 1.5 percent GDP growth. In fact, the International Monetary Fund reduced their overall forecast this week for global growth largely as a result of poor performance out of Europe. Europe's powerhouse, Germany, saw its growth for 2019 cut by 0.6 percent because of anemic consumption and weak industrial production data.    Italy, one of the problem children of the EU, saw its growth forecasts cut by 0.4 percentage points as a result of weak

North Adams ZBA OKs Storage Units in Residential Area
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
11:09AM / Thursday, January 31, 2019
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-1 on Monday to allow the construction of storage units off residential Liberty and Eagle streets.    The argument by property owner Michael Dowling was that the new units will replace the old barn that had been used for storage for nearly a century, long before zoning. The application was not a change of use, he said, but a continuance.    "The barn's gone," he said. "We're trying to make that property nice and feasible again for the neighborhood."   The barn is currently in pieces on the Liberty Street side. Dowling said it had to be removed because it was no longer

09:54PM / Wednesday, January 30, 2019
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Ryan Carney scored a game-high 23 points Wednesday to lead the Bridgewater State men's basketball team past MCLA, 75-64.   The Bears sweep the season series as they improve to 6-13 overall but are now 4-3 in the conference.   The game was knotted up at 28 at half-time and neither team could create separation for much of the closing half. With the score at 54-53 in favor of BSU, the Bears (6-13, 4-3 MASCAC) rattled off an 8-0 spurt to take control. Admar Jaramillo started the run with a three pointer from the right wing and then Dimitri St. Louis scored five straight points to give the Bears a 62-53 lead with just 3:57 left.   MCLA's Gerald
