Holiday Hours: Memorial Day
09:00AM / Saturday, May 26, 2018

Photo Courtesy of U.S. Army Arlington National Cemetery is the nation's first federal military cemetery. A ceremony is held each Memorial Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Memorial Day is being celebrated Monday, May 28. It is a federal holiday observing the sacrifices of the nation's servicemen and -women. It started as a day to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers, particularly in the South, and many states adopted the day as Decoration Day to commemorate all U.S. soldiers after World War I.

Memorial Day was established as a federal holiday in 1971 by Congress. It falls on the last Monday in May.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Brayton Elementary School pupils got a lesson in sacrifice and honor during the school's annual Memorial Day observance on Friday.    Guest speaker James Canavan, a Coast Guard and Navy veteran, reminded the assembly in the school's cafetorium that some 37,000 Massachusetts residents had given their lives over the years "so that we can do things like we're doing here today."    It was a commemoration, he said, a matter of remembering together the sacrifices made by the men and

@theMarket: Nothing Memorable in the Markets this Week
By Bill Schmick,
04:35PM / Friday, May 25, 2018
Most indexes ended the week where they started. While day traders may have lost or gained from intraday moves, serious investors simply ignored the constant and contradictory stream of news coming out of Washington.   It isn't worth the space to comment on all the on-again, off-again series of tweets and statements that has become part of our daily diet. The main events that did carry some substantive weight were the House rollback of the Dodd-Frank rules. This easing of regulations on all but the largest banks, removes the required ‘stress tests' from most banks. While it relaxes some of the more stringent rules on banks, it does continue to regulate those areas that

North Adams Airport Commission Delays Hangar Decision
By Jack Guerino, iBerkshires Staff
06:24PM / Thursday, May 24, 2018
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A Bennington, Vt., man who has been pushing to open his aviation and skydiving business, was approved last week to lease office space at Harriman and West Airport.   The Airport Commission voted Tuesday, May 15, to grant Alex Kelly permission to use office space in the city's hangar until June 30. But it delayed a vote to allow permanent use of space in the recently renovated hangar to solicit more information from potential occupants.    Kelly said he felt he was still being given the runaround.   "It is an obstruction and discriminatory," he said. "I need resolution one way or the other. I am constantly spending time, money

'Book Club': Can Be Judged From Its Cover
By Michael S. Goldberger, iBerkshires film critic
04:06PM / Thursday, May 24, 2018
The grist and gist of the pleasantly engaging but no-great-shakes "Book Club," directed by Bill Holderman and starring four of our national treasures, reminded me of an informing moment a few years back. My wife, Joanne, and I were driving across the Neversink River in the Catskills just as Mick Jagger and that band of his came over the radio. It was "Jumping Jack Flash" that stirred me to opine, "Can you imagine if someday we're in the old age home and the Rolling Stones visit to entertain us?" Her answer surprised me.   "Cool!" said my co-veteran of the Hippy Era, the resilience therein implied brightening the picture I had

The Independent Investor: It Is No Longer Enough to Simply Manage Money
By Bill Schmick,
03:37PM / Thursday, May 24, 2018
Back in the day, money managers were revered. News stories spotlighting the year's "hottest hands," or that hedge fund's rising star were all the rage. Retail investors chased performance and paid for it. But times are changing, and simply beating the market for a year or two fails to impress most investors.   And with good reason.   Most of us are in the investment game for the long haul. We are saving for retirement: a process involving decades of saving and planning. Chasing the firm or adviser that "beat the market" this year has turned out to be a disastrous approach to that concept.   Most of us have now realized that you can't beat the

The Choice for Western Mass: Lead or Lose
, Guest Column
02:22PM / Thursday, May 24, 2018
State Houses across the country, and right here in Massachusetts, are facing a moment of generational change in leadership. Particularly in Western Mass, which is too often ignored by decision-makers on Beacon Hill, we will have to speak up — and fight together — for the funding, the projects and the policy priorities we need.   There are many issues where we are already leading the state. On the opioid epidemic, which has hit our region especially hard, we helped create the Narcan bulk purchase program that has saved thousands of lives. And our residents have banded together to form groups like Belchertown's Speaking Out About Addiction and Recovery, the Opioid Task

Northern Berkshire EMS Debuts at Ambulance Service's 40th Anniversary
By Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff
04:02AM / Thursday, May 24, 2018

The North Adams Ambulance Service gets its license around 1978 with longtime President Barbara Wagner in the middle.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Ambulance Service was created in 1978 to fill a void in emergency care in the city.   The closure of the private Mohawk Ambulance Service prompted a dedicated group of directors and about a dozen emergency medical technicians to form a new nonprofit to service the city and its environs.    Some 40 years later, its workforce is closer to 100 and it covers most of North Berkshire and a wide swath of Southern Vermont. It merged with Village Ambulance and it's ready to embark on its next chapter with a new name
