Local Art Professor Recognized for Her Sustainable Work

Artist Melanie Mowinski's 'Code Blue,' made from old wallpaper and her husband's shirt, tells the story of her husband's heart problems.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — An art professor at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts recently earned a reward for her work in book binding.

Melanie Mowinski applied for the Guild of Bookworkers Mid-Career Award, a newly established award by the guild.

The printmaker showcased her "Plunder Books," a sustainable artistic practice in which she takes trash and discarded items and recycles them into a story. She's also offered a course of the same name.

Abbott Memorial Students Learn Fire Safety Through Burn Demonstration

Children were told to cover their faces as the smoke blew in their direction. Firefighters wanted the demonstration to be as real as possible.  FLORIDA, Mass. — Students from Abbott Memorial School received an up-close lesson in fire safety Thursday during a field trip to the fire station, where they met with local firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and State Police for a live, hands-on demonstration.   The Volunteer Fire Department has hosted the program for some years now. Current adult volunteer firefighters noted they attended the program themselves when they were in school, estimating the tradition has been running for over 35 years.   "We have

Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day is being observed Monday, Oct. 13. As Columbus Day, it commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas on Oct. 12, 1492. As Indigenous Peoples Day, it commemorates the harm to their cultures and communities that followed Columbus' arrival. 

Columbus' voyage had been celebrated on significant anniversaries but did not become an official holiday until it was recognized by Colorado in 1905. It was declared a federal holiday in 1937.

BFAIR Launch Coat and Boot Drive for Local Veterans

North Adams Group Launches Nip Bottle Return Pilot Program

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A group of local partners launched an upcoming pilot program to help curb the amount of alcohol nip bottle litter in the City of North Adams and neighboring communities.    At a City Council meeting in September, Mayor Jennifer Macksey and Police Chief Mark Bailey presented the need for North Adams to prohibit the sale of nip bottles. This conversation sparked an initiative led by City Councilor Keith Bona and Benjamin Lamb from the NAMAzing Initiative, in collaboration with BFAIR.
