Clarksburg State Park Hosts Free Summer Programs

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Enjoy free programs at this summer at Clarksburg State Park and meet Smokey the Bear on Saturday.    The state park is located at 1199 Middle Road; a day-use parking fee applies.    All programs are run out of the Nature Center. Programming is free and open to the public but children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for the weather; inclement weather cancels outdoor events.    Note that programming does not occur on Aug. 11-17, 23 and 30. McCann to Destroy School Records for 2017-19

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — In accordance with state regulations, all temporary cumulative school and health records (except permanent grade records) for students who graduated from or left McCann Technical School during the 2017-2019 school year will be destroyed on Aug. 13.

Students interested in retrieving their records before they are destroyed should contact the school office at 413-663-5363, Ext. 107, between 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. before the destruction date of Aug. 13.

Trump Administration Hold on Education Funds Threatens Programs

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — An after-school program that enhances students' school day learning is at risk due to actions of the Trump administration.   The Department of Education notified states that it is withholding more than $6 billion in federal grants for K-12 education.   That includes $108 million for schools in Massachusetts. And, the North Adams Public Schools are at risk for losing some of the $740,000 in grants it expects to gets under the federal Title I, Title II and Title IV programs.   Superintendent Timothy Callahan said the delayed funding will affect some professional development and salaries, such as leadership staff who may get a small percentage of

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Nick Hunkele struck out 12 in a complete-game effort on the mound Sunday as the North Adams SteepleCats beat the North Shore Navigators, 1-0, in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Hunkele scattered five hits and walked one over nine innings, lowering his earned run average to 5.21 this summer, as North Adams improved to 13-16.   J.T. Thompson hit a leadoff single and scored on Alex Mendes' RBI single in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie.   North Adams is on the road Monday and Tuesday before coming home to face Upper Valley on Wednesady at Joe Wolfe Field.

Greylock Thunder Falls in Final of Summer Storm Tournament

FITCHBURG, Mass. — Nolan Buck proudly served his country in the Marine Corps from 2015 to 2019 as a corporal.    Growing up in Springfield, he joined the Marines' Early Entry Program at 16 years of age.   "I was the only person in my family to have ever joined the military," he said. "I wanted to join the toughest branch. Greylock Thunder Rolls at Home Tournament

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Greylock Thunder dominated, and Dalton picked up a win on Saturday at the second annual Summer Storm Tournament on the Francis Millard Softball Fields.   The host Thunder won its three Saturday games by a combined score of 29-6 to improve to 4-0 in the tournament.   Dalton, which fell to the Thunder in Friday night’s opener, started Saturday with a 19-7 loss to the Elite Fastpitch squad out of Greene County, N.Y.   But Dalton bounced back to earn a 21-3 blowout win over the Rotterdam (N.Y.) Post 125 Juniors Split Legion Baseball Double-Header

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. – The North Adams Post 125 Juniors split an American Legion Baseball double-header at Belchertown by matching 9-8 scores.   In the first game, North Adams built a 9-2 lead and held on after the hosts scored four in the fifth and two in the seventh.   Carson Dix went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Maddox Cooke was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener.   Cooke also struck out seven in 4 and a third innings on the mound before giving the ball to Jack Marlowe. BAAMS Holding its 7th Summer Jazz Day Camp

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Each summer, a group of master musicians assembles in North Adams at The Berkshires' Academy for Advanced Musical Studies (BAAMS) to offer the region's youth ages 12 to 18 a full week of learning.

This year, Berkshire County musicians ages 12-18 will have the chance to study and play with some of the world’s finest musicians, including NBC's "Saturday Night Live" Band saxophonist and Juilliard faculty member, Ron Blake, guitar master Rodney Jones, along with two master drummer percussionists, Mino Cinelu and Kenwood Dennard.

Greylock Thunder Opens Home Tourney with Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Avery Lane and Gianna Witek each homered Friday as the Greylock Thunder 14U travel softball team opened its second annual Summer Storm Tournament with a 14-6 win over Dalton on Francis Millard Field.   Lane went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Witek was 2-for-4 with five RBIs in a 16-hit attack for the Thunder.   Lydia Gaudreau went 3-for-3 at the top of the order, and Ava Jagello was 2-for-2 at the plate.   Kyleigh Cooper went the distance in the circle for Greylock, striking out eight while scattering four hits in five innings of work.

Post 125 Juniors Win at West Springfield

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Owen KoaMaya went 2-for-2 and scored twice Friday to lead the North Adams Post 125 Juniors to a 13-5 win in the first game of an American Legion Baseball double-header at West Springfield.   Lucas Hamilton also had a pair of hits in an eight-hit attack for North Adams.   Mason Fierro and Emery Rotter split time on the mound.   Fierro struck out three in 4 and a third innings to earn the win. Rotter struck out three in 2 and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.   The Post 125 Juniors (8-2) are at Belchertown on Saturday.
