North Adams OKs $45M Budget for Fiscal 2023

Mayor Jennifer Macksey presents her city first budget on Tuesday.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council approved 8-1 a $45 million budget appropriation for fiscal 2023 on Tuesday night.     The spending plan of $44,536,735 is up 5.08 percent over this year, or about $2.15 million.    "While this percentage may seem high, we will demonstrate that we have the capacity through our revenues to support this budget," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey. "We have seen areas of significant increases in revenue on the School Department side through our Chapter 70 funding, cannabis revenue, as well as rooms occupancy

North Adams Police Arrest Two With Drug Charges

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Police arrested Yadiel Martinez and Ashley Bartosik who allegedly were carrying nearly 970 bags of heroin and 52.7 grams of cocaine/crack cocaine.   On Thursday, June 9, 2022, the North Adams Police Department executed multiple search warrants within the City of North Adams for narcotics distribution.    This led to the arrest of Martinez and Bartosik.    Along with the drugs, police reported that they also had $7,697.   Assisting with these search warrants were members of the Adams Police Department and Pittsfield Police Department.

North Adams Vigil Held for Murder Victim Jillian Tatro

Jillian Tatro's friends Tara Vallieres and Kristen McClain and cousin Aaron Volpi speak about losing her at Tuesday's vigil. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Jillian Tatro was any number of things: friend, mother and grandmother, skilled outdoorswoman, hunter, equestrian, lover of animals.   But last month she joined another list: local women who have died from domestic violence.    "I've known Jillian since she was about 20 years old," said Elizabeth Mitchell of the Elizabeth Freeman Center. "She was a mom, a grandmother, a daughter, granddaughter, a sister and a niece and a friend. Jillian was also a wife who was brutally murdered by her husband.

SteepleCats Earn First Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Ryan Galanie went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs Tuesday as the North Adams SteepleCats earned their first win of the summer, a 5-3 victory over the North Shore Navigators.   Hunter Pasqualini went 2-for-2 with a RBI, and Alex Lane doubled for the SteepleCats (1-7).   Austin McKinney earend the win on the mound, striking out five and allowing just one unearned run in three innings of work. Will Hearn threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save.   North Adams goes to Keene, N.H., on Wednesday.

Fire Officials Urge Residents to Leave Fireworks to the Professionals

STOW, Mass. — Massachusetts State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and State Police Colonel Christopher S. Mason are reminding residents to leave fireworks to the professionals this summer.   Massachusetts fire departments reported more than 900 fires related to illegal fireworks between 2012 and 2021, officials said. North Adams Superintendent Agrees to Three-Year Contract

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Superintendent Barbara Malkas intends to stay with the North Adams Public Schools through 2025.    The School Committee last week approved a three-year contract with Malkas that would pay her $147,637 in the year beginning July 1, $149,852 in year two and $152,100 in year three.
