 ADAMS, Mass. — The Massachusetts Audubon Society has been part of the visioning process of the 1,063-acre Greylock Glen development for well more than a decade. Now it will be providing environmental educational opportunities at the glen as the first service provider at the soon to open Outdoor Center in the 50 acres being developed. The Select Board on Wednesday voted unanimously to enter into negotiations with the nature nonprofit to offer year-round programming. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city is ending a year filled with major projects getting underway, some massive infrastructure challenges and the announced revival of a significant pillar of the community.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — This fall, the North Adams Public Schools (NAPS) District Arts Integration Specialist, Leslie Appleget, won the 2023 Outstanding Community Arts Education Collaborative Multidisciplinary Award from stateside arts collaborative Arts|Learning. The award was conferred at Arts|Learning's 36th Annual Champions of Arts Education Advocacy Awards in November at Boston Renaissance Charter School. Appleget is the only award recipient in the 2023 award cohort to represent arts education work based in Berkshire County. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — ROOTS Teen Center has hired Amelia Wood as the new Executive Director. In this new position, Wood aims to meet the interests and needs of teens by creating partnerships with Northern Berkshire school systems and local organizations, artists, and collaborators. Wood, a North Adams native, graduated from Drury High School and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where she studied Fine & Performing Arts and Sociology. Wood spent the last decade in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her early career was focused on early childhood art and museum education. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Committee on Tuesday reorganized for the new term, heard updates on a number of issues and approved a gun safety resolution promoted by the Be SMART campaign. Mayor Jennifer Macksey is the chair of the committee because of her office but the vice chair is elected by the committee members. David Sookey was unanimously elected vice chair on the nomination of Richard Alcombright. Sookey had nominated Alcombright and Emily Daunis nominated herself; all nominations were seconded. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In the wake of a significant increase in the incidence of respiratory illness locally, Berkshire Health Systems has resumed mandatory masking for staff, patients and visitors, and has instituted changes in its visitation policy, effective on Wednesday, Jan. 3. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A local taxi company was told by the city to close its doors at 8 a.m. on New Year's Day after failing to find a new office location. The closure of OTT Taxi was announced as "temporary" through Facebook posts but not on its website. The company has apparently been operating without a permanent location since at least October. According to the city, owner John Lord has told it of a half-dozen potential sites but none have panned out.
